Continuing Education is a membership requirement for AIA members. The extra education enables the architect to keep up on current trends, ideas and information; master new knowledge and skills; plan for the future and responsibly meet the role society entrusts to its architects.
The AIA records continuing education credit in learning units (LUs). One LU/Hour is equal to one educational program contact hour. Effective January 1, 2000, members must accrue 18 Learning Units Hours (LUHrs) with 8 qualifying for HWS (Health Safety Welfare) each year in order to maintain AIA membership. If the 18 LUHrs were not accrued for the previous year, the member has the opportunity to accrue them the current year in addition to the 18 LUHrs for current year for a total of 36 LUHrs. Member has until September to earn the deficient credits for the past and current years. IMPORTANT: all paper work must be received at AIA/CES Program Department in Oklahoma by September 30.
A member who exceeds the annual requirement in a given year may carry up to 18 LUHrs (including 8 hours of HSW) into the next year if needed to meet that year's requirement.
AIA members can participate in a variety of learning programs and activities through CES. Members receive LUHrs for each program in which they participate.
How LUHrs are Earned
Members earn LUHrs by attending seminars or programs sponsored by AIA/CES registered providers. In this manner, the provider is responsible for reporting the attendance to the AIA/CES recording center.
Self-Reporting
Members may participate in self-directed study, including reading books, research, interviewing subject experts, viewing videos. or listening to audio cassettes on architectural topics. Note that it is not acceptable for health, safety, and welfare (HSW) credit and some state licensing boards will not accept this type of reporting for mandatory continuing education. To be eligible for credit, the activity must be planned, educational, and new knowledge for you (recommended minimum of three hours). Members who earn LUHrs in this manner are responsible for reporting their participation.
For LUHrs to be properly recorded, members must complete the pre-printed "AIA/CES Self Report" form and submit it to the AIA/CES Program Department in Oklahoma-address can be found on the form. Members calculate LUHrs for self-reported study by determining the number of hours spent in architecture-related learning.
Structured Self-Reported Program
This is a structured activity offered by an organized third party who is not a CES registered provider. Supplementary documentation of attendance/participation will usually be required when reporting this activity to fulfill a state licensure requirement. |
